Payment Systems in BH in 2023

  • During 2023, the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully completed all the tasks related to stable functioning of payment systems which it owns and operates. 50,822,188 transactions in the value of KM 163,096,124,957 were carried out, with the growth of both the number and value of transactions recorded compared to the previous year.
  • The share of the first five banks in the number of the performed transactions through the CBBH payment systems in 2023 was 56.64% in the number and 50.67% in the value, being higher compared to the previous year by 3.32% in the number and 0.25% in the value.
  • Out of the total number of transactions, 55% was related to intrabank transactions, while 45% was related to interbank transactions. By value, 47% was related to intrabank and 53% to interbank transactions.
  • Almost 2/3 of intrabank transactions were initiated by paper orders, while only 1/3 was initiated by electronic orders. Observing the way interbank transactions were initiated, the collected data show that almost the same number of interbank transactions was initiated by paper orders as it was by electronic orders.
  • 22 banks in BH offer electronic banking (mobile and/or internet banking).
  • There is an increasing number of clients with this service contracted. On 31 December 2023, 1,575,942 entities, out of which 119,595 legal persons and 1,456,347 natural persons had access to electronic banking, as a contracted service.
  • Internet banking has 31% of entities that have electronic banking as a contracted type of service, while 69% have mobile banking.
  • Legal persons use internet banking much more (82%) than mobile banking, while natural persons prefer mobile banking (73%).
  • 69% of electronic banking transactions are initiated by legal persons, while 31% are initiated by natural persons. Observed by the value of electronic banking transactions, 98% of the value refers to transactions initiated by legal persons, while 2% refers to transactions initiated by natural persons.
  • 5 banks processed interbank payment orders received at post offices.
  • The same as in the previous years, only 1/3 of entities with contracted service of electronic banking used such services actively, while 2/3 of persons had a possibility to use it, but did not use it. Taking into account these facts, and generally mass digitalisation in finance, which also includes payment transactions, the CBBH, in cooperation with the World Bank, created and published „Digital Payment Guide“, as a part of the CBBH activities in financial education.   • Through the system of clearing method of international payments calculation with Serbia and Montenegro, in which seven banks from BH participate, BH banks placed 11,655 orders worth EUR 221,290,817 during 2023.
