Advancing Finance for Women Entrepreneurs: The WE Finance Code

The Women Entrepreneurs Finance Code (WE Finance Code) is a global initiative uniting financial service providers, regulators, development institutions, and other stakeholders in the financial ecosystem. Its mission: to increase access to finance for women-led/-owned micro, small and medium enterprises (WMSMEs) – empowering them to grow, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to economies and communities worldwide.

The WE Finance Code, initially launched in 2023 at the World Bank, is being implemented by major Multilateral Development Banks. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is the Implementing Partner of the WE Finance Code in 14 countries across Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Southern and eastern Mediterranean region, and the Western Balkans, including Bosnia and Herzegovina. It supports the adaptation of the program to local contexts while fostering global and regional collaboration.

At the country level, The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina plays the essential role of both coordinating the initiative and collecting gender-disaggregated data, bringing together key actors in the financial ecosystem to turn global principles into local action.

Data is Key

Closing the financing gap requires more than intention – it requires data. The Code supports financial institutions in accessing and analyzing high-quality, timely, and gender-disaggregated data on the use of credit and deposit services by WMSMEs. These insights are key to designing effective solutions and driving measurable impact.
