The dynamic of withdrawal of banknotes from circulation:

Banknotes of the convertible mark in denominations of 10 KM, 20 KM, 50 KM and 100 KM put into circulation in the period from 1998 to 2009 can be used for unhindered payments until December 31, 2024.

Starting from January 1, 2025, the mentioned issues of KM banknotes cease to be legal tender and cannot be accepted in circulation to settle any obligations, and they are subject only to the replacement process as banknotes withdrawn from circulation.

After they cease to be legal tender, the banknotes, will be replaced by commercial banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2025.

After the expiration of the replacement period in commercial banks, the replacement will be performed by the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina within a period of 10 years, starting from January 1, 2026, and ending on December 31, 2035.

Banknotes which will remain in circulation:

Banknotes in denominations of 10 KM, 20 KM, 50 KM and 100 KM issued in 2012, 2017, 2019 and 2024, as well as both editions of banknotes in denominations of 200 KM remain in circulation and are not subject to the withdrawal process.

Banknotes in denominations of 10 KM, 20 KM, 50 KM and 100 KM, which will remain in circulation, have an upright micro-optical security thread "Motion™" the display of which can be seen here.

Banknotes that are withdrawn from circulation do not have this security feature, and based on this easily noticeable visual difference, it can be easily determined whether it is an issue that will remain in circulation, or an issue that will cease to be legal tender as of December 31, 2024.

Banknotes of issues that remain in circulation after 31 December 2024 can be seen at the link KM banknotes that remain in circulation.

Withdrawal of 10 KM, 20 KM, 50 KM and 100 KM banknotes released into circulation in the period from 1998 to 2009 will provide the following:

  • The level of quality of banknotes in circulation will increase, as banknotes that are withdrawn from circulation will be replaced with new, high-quality banknotes.
  • Only banknotes with identical and enhanced anti-counterfeiting protection will remain in circulation, making authentication easier for the public, manual banknote handlers, and banknote receiving and processing devices.
