CBBH Marks the World Savings Day, Household Deposits Amount to KM 16.94 Billion

The Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina (CBBH) marks 31 October, the World Savings Day with the visits of primary and secondary school pupils to the Main Units and Branches in Sarajevo, Banja Luka, Mostar, Brčko and Pale this year as well.

During these visits, the CBBH hosted 400 primary and secondary school pupils, providing young people the opportunity to learn more about the significance of saving, responsible finance management, and the key role of the Central Bank in keeping the economic system stability.

On the occasion of the World Savings Day, the CBBH publishes the available data on deposits. The total household deposits with commercial banks in BH at the end of September 2024 amounted to KM 16.94 billion, being higher by KM 1.42 billion or 9.2% compared to September 2023. Household deposits have the largest share of 51.6% in the total deposits with commercial banks, thus representing an important base for bank financing and functioning.

Observing the household deposits by maturity structure, term and savings deposits at the end of September 2024 amounted to KM 5.31 billion or 31.4% of the total household deposits, being higher by 15.6% at the annual level. It is important to point out that long-term household deposits increased at the annual level by 16.7%, which is a certain sign of the banking sector stability and the result of the initiated actions of rather high interest rates exceeding 3% on term savings deposits, savings with special benefits such as advance interest payments, fixed interest rates, stimulating interest rates, etc. Sight deposits of households at the end of September 2024 amounted to KM 3.63 billion or 21.4% of the total household deposits, and decreased by 9.9% at the annual level. Transaction accounts of households amounted to KM 7.99 billion or 47.2% of the total household deposits and increased by 16.0% at the annual level.

Regarding currency structure, at the end of September 2024, the total household deposits in the domestic currency amounted to KM 9.53 billion, which is a 56.3% share, mainly due to the high share of household transaction accounts in KM in the amount of KM 7.21 billion, deposits in EUR and in KM indexed to the euro currency amounted to KM 6.70 billion or 39.6%, while deposits in other foreign currencies amounted to KM 707 million or 4.1% of the total household deposits. At the annual level, household deposits in KM at the end of September 2024 increased by 14.6% (due to a strong increase of transaction accounts in KM amounting to KM 1.06 billion), and deposits in foreign currencies by 3.1%.
