Support for the Establishment of a Single Deposit Insurance Agency on the State Level

7/18/2001

Governor of the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina supported the initiative to establish one state-level Deposit Insurance Agency during the regular coordination meeting with the representatives of the entity Banking and Deposit Insurance Agencies held on Wednesday 18th July 2001 in Sarajevo. The representatives of the agencies reported that the working group has been already established. It will consider the legal and economic aspects of the establishment of the single Deposit Insurance Agency. The members of the Working Group are the representatives of the Financial Ministries, Banking Agencies, Insurance Agencies of both entities, OHR and USAID representatives.

Representative of the World Bank Vicki Peterson confirmed that the WB supports the establishment of united deposit insurance agency.
Governor of the CBBH Peter Nicholl emphasized that smaller number of the banks will fulfill the conditions to sign the contract for deposit insurance (there are 55 banks, out of it there are 36 banks in Federation and 19 in RS). Only four banks have already signed the contracts with Federal Deposit Insurance Agency. According to Acting Manager of Deposit Insurance Agency of RS, only two banks in this entity could be the candidates for deposit insurance. Governor Nicholl foresees that 12 banks could have the deposit insurance and that is why he thinks that one agency for deposit insurance for the whole BH could be sufficient.
