On October 11 in Sarajevo , there was held the Second International Conference "Reform of the Banking System in BIH". The meeting, held in the Congress Hall of "Holiday Inn" Hotel was attended by more than150 participants - representatives of the commercial banks, international financial institutions and foreign governments, and the representatives of the CBBH. The conference is opened by Governor of the CBBH , Peter Nicholl. The Ambassador of USA in BIH Thomas Miller and the Chief of the EU Mission for BIH Hans Jorg Kretchmer addressed to the attendees.

CONCLUSIONS OF THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON "REFORM OF THE BANKING SYSTEM IN BIH"
CENTRAL BANK OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
SARAJEVO, October 11 2000

The aim of the reform of banking system is banks' ownership transformation and creation of efficient banking system in the transparent market environment. Following activities are necessary in the transition process of banking sector: · Creation of the conditions for acceleration of the state banks privatization and elimination of the causes that slow this process, motivating of the strategic investors who would introduce new technologies and new banking products, · Strengthen the position of banks' associations in all levels, as well as within the legal framework , so as within the real role they can have, · Implementation of the deposit insurance scheme in order to return the people's trust into banks and increase the influx of saving deposits, and regaining of the confidence in the whole banking system, · Final directing of the payments system to banks with the leading role of the CBBH in the system of transactions and settlements, and standardized provision of the payments system instruments, · Intensifying of he introduction of non cash payments instruments such as check and collateral bill, establishment of the legislation on basis of the collateral, establishment of the institutions for registration of pawn and development of the market for real property as well as creation of the efficient legal framework for protection of creditors, · Presentation/promotion of banks in order to create with potential clients clear picture on banks, · Improvement of the management in banks and application of the international standards, · Defying of the clear strategy of the development and macroeconomic policy of BIH. The Central Bank of BIH is expressing its gratitude to the participants of the Conference as well as its intention, to, within legal provisions, continue with the activities that will bring to creation of sound and efficient banking sector.
