32 Tons of DEM Coins Returned to Germany

9/15/1999

More Proof that the KM is strong and here to stay came on September 15th, when 2 trucks carrying more than 32 tons of DEM coins, with a value of more than 9.6 million DEM reached Dresdner Bank AG, headquartered in Frankfurt. The coins represent only a fraction of the amount of German money that must be returned to the Bundesbank in Frankfurt Germany, for two important reasons. Firstly, to make room for more KM in the Payments Systems of BiH, and secondly, to be repatriated in time for the introduction of Euro Coins and Bank Notes in early 2002 when the DEM is taken out of circulation. To place the situation into perspective, the following is a breakdown on how many coins were sent back to Germany.

Denomination 5 DEM

For reasons of security, the departure of these trucks from the CBBH was embargoed until the cargo was safely unloaded in Germany. Future shipments of DEM coins will be handled in the same manner for the safety of personnel and security of the shipment.
