Counterfeit banknotes

8/11/1999

The Governor of the CBBH, Peter Nicholl, met with his advisers on Tuesday 10 August,1999 to discuss progress in dealing with the counterfeits KM banknotes and to develop an information strategy for agencies that handle cash and for public.
The meeting was informed that counterfeits notes have continued to appear over last week but the numbers were quite small. Most of the counterfeits were of the Federation variant of the KM 100 and the Federation variant of the KM10. The quality of some of the KM 100 counterfeits was quite good and implied a sophisticated printing process had been used.
It was decided that the CBBH will prepare, with the help of its advisers, an information booklet on the counterfeits banknotes. This will be distributed as soon as possible to payments bureaus, banks and other agencies that handle large quantities of cash. It will assist them in recognizing the counterfeits notes. This information will be quickly updated if different variations of the counterfeits appear.

A summary of this information will also be made available to the public and the media in order to make easier for people to identify the counterfeits notes. This will make it more difficult for the counterfeits to be distributed.
