The Story Published in Dnevni Avaz

3/5/1999

The story published in Dnevni Avaz on March 2, 1999 had a number of factual mistakes. The article stated that the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina, (CBBH), is going to buy the National Bank building. This is not necessarily true so far as the National Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina, (NBBH), may not legally own the building in the first place.

The BiH Council of Ministers has been asked to make a decision on the ownership of the building at 25 Maršala Tita that the CBBH currently occupies.

One possible answer is that the building is owned by the State of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the State could then assign the building over to the CBBH for its use. In this case it would not be necessary for the CBBH to buy the building at 25 Maršala Tita.

The Dnevni Avaz article of March 2, 1999, further stated that the CBBH would purchase the building with "the profit of the foreign currency coverage of KM". This is not possible.

While the CBBH does make an income from investing foreign reserves, this income is used to meet the operating expenses of the CBBH. The net profit of the CBBH in 1998 was around KM 170.000,- and this net profit is used to strengthen the "Currency Board" coverage of the KM.
