Payment systems in BiH in 2024

• During 2024, the CBBH successfully responded to all tasks when it comes to the stable functioning of the payment systems it owns and operates, namely the Real-time gross settlement system and the Giro clearing system.

• 53,398,208 transactions worth KM 183,042,469,562 were executed through the CBBH payment systems, and an increase in the number and value of transactions was recorded compared to the previous year.

• The total number of organization units of commercial banks was 749, at the end of 2024, with a slight increase compared to the previous year.

• Of the total number of transactions, 56% relate to intra-banking and 44% to inter-banking. Observed by value, 45% relate to intra-banking and 55% to inter-banking transactions.

• 61% of intra-bank transactions were initiated with paper payment orders, while only 39% were initiated with electronic orders. As for the method of initiating inter-bank transactions, based on the collected data, it is evident that almost the same number of inter-bank transactions were initiated with paper payment orders as with electronic orders.

• A total of 22 banks in BH provides the electronic banking (mobile and/or internet banking).

• As of 31 December 2024, 1,770,172 entities in BH had access to electronic banking as a contracted type of service, of which 136,077 were legal entities and 1,634,095 were natural persons. There is a pronounced trend of increasing the number of clients who have contracted this type of service.

• As in previous years, only 1/3 of entities with contracted electronic banking services actively use these services, while 2/3 of entities have the possibility of using them, but do not use them. Taking into account these facts, and the general mass digitalization of finance, which also includes payment transactions, the CBBH, in cooperation with the World Bank, has developed and published a “Guide to Digital Payments”, as part of the CBBH activities in the field of financial education. • During 2024 BH banks placed 12,779 orders worth EUR 392,817,642 through the clearing system for international payments with Serbia and Montenegro, in which seven banks from BH participate.
