Data on Card-Based Operations in BH

Out of total 29 commercial banks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 25 provided cards services to their clients by the end of 2011. The total number of issued cards, by the end of December 2011, was 1, 791.045 being more by 97,579 cards compared to the end of December 2010. The debit cards are prevailing, there are 1,480,885 issued of these, followed by credit cards with 180,453 issued, and cards with deferred payment, there are 129,707 of these.

The total value of cards based transactions, in the country and abroad, amounted to KM 6.03 billion during the last year, which is KM 562 million more than in the previous year.

Out of total value of transactions, KM 4.32 billion of cash or 72% was withdrawn from the ATMs, while KM 1.71 billion or 28% was realized at the POSTs (point of sale terminals), out of which KM 761 million (44%) is withdrawal of cash and KM 951 million (56%) was payment of goods and services. The ratio between the values realized through the ATMs according to the value realized at the POSTs (44%:56%) is improved compared to the previous year (in 2010 it was 49%:51%).

The average value of a transaction was KM 131, and compared to the previous year it decreased by KM 7. The average turnover per a card annually amounted to KM 3,367 (KM 281 per month), and compared to 2010 when the average turnover amounted to KM 3,229, it is increase of KM 138.

The amount to KM 297 million was recorded through the ATMs and POSTs abroad, with the cards of BH banks. Out of that amount, the cash amounting to KM 115 million was withdrawn, and the goods were paid in the amount of KM 181 million. Comparing to 2010, a growth of consumption abroad, of KM 25 million, was recorded via cards operations. Turnover with the value of KM 821 million by foreign banks' cards was performed through the ATMs and POSTs of the BH banks. Out of that amount, KM 635 million of cash was withdrawn from the ATMs and POSTs and the value of goods and services paid by foreign banks cards was about KM 186 million, which is KM 30 millions increase compared to 2010.

There is premanent insisting of banks to increase the number of ATMs and POSTs, and in 2011 there were in total 1,202 ATMs and 18,589 POSTs.

In 2011, the number of branches of banks was reduced from 378 to 363, while the number of lower level organizational units (agencies, counter...) was increased from 421 to 472.

Out of total number of banks, 27 provided the electronic banking services. Although there is still a small number of citizens using the Internet for banking operations, a significant increase in the number of entities using these services is evident caused by increased number of individuals. In 2010, the number of individuals who used the services of electronic or Internet banking was 48,545, while in 2011 that number increased and amounted to 70,474.  The increase is more obvious since there were just 18,000 of individuals who used this service in 2008. Also, the number of legal entities using the Internet for banking operations increased; there were 23,865 of those covered with this service in 2011, and 19,257 in 2010.
